All over Toronto—hiding in plain sight—are codes in the street. Everyday, utility location symbols are spray-painted onto sidewalks by city construction workers. Most of the time, pedestrians look right past these innocuous technical markings, and almost never pause to contemplate their meanings. While the City of Toronto remains hostile to graffiti artists, City workers routinely employ this similar practice, in similar locales. This project aims to understand the meanings, histories and practices bound up in these spray-painted signs. In short, it seeks to decode the street.
